2-Day Incredible Kalandula Falls Itinerary

If you’re yearning for a journey into Angola’s natural splendor, then a 2-Day Incredible Kalandula Falls Itinerary is just what you need. This expedition offers more than just a glimpse into the country’s geographical wonders; it’s a full embrace of the raw, untouched beauty that Angola has to offer.

2-Day Incredible Kalandula Falls Itinerary

Pro Tip: Come prepared for the road less traveled. Leave the city cars behind and roll in with an SUV or, better yet, a 4×4. Pack a spare tire, check your hydraulic jack, and load up on fuel, water, and snacks for the trek – amenities are scarce once you hit the road.

Group Adventure Hack: When venturing out with a convoy, walkie-talkies are your best ally. I recommend the Baofeng brand for their solid range. They were lifesavers for us, perfect for navigating no-signal zones, coordinating turns, spotting potholes, and alerting to checkpoints.

Much like that laid-back weekend in Benguela, where stretching out your stay unveils the city’s true vibe, the trip to Kalandula Falls is about plunging into nature’s unspoiled beauty. Kick off your escapade with the break of dawn, and by nightfall, the memories of cascading waters will have you rejuvenated. Trust me, the Calandula Falls are an experience that’ll redefine your thrill for exploration. Ready for an unforgettable ride?

Day 1

Mystical Pedras Negras de Pungo Andongo

Set your alarms for an early start at 6 AM this Saturday, because we’re hitting the road for a thrilling 5-hour drive to the mystical Pedras Negras de Pungo Andongo. This majestic rock formation is something out of ‘Avatar,’ with landscapes so surreal, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into another world.

Just off a dusty trail from the main road, you’ll come across an expanse of dark soil rumored to bear the footprints of Queen N’ginga. For those unfamiliar, Queen N’Ginga was a formidable ruler in the south of the Congo before the Portuguese set foot in the 16th century. She’s revered around these parts, almost like a deity.

At this quaint lookout, you’re promised a breathtaking vista of the towering rocks and a river that snakes by. Trust me, the detour is a must.

Further along, you’ll hit a sleepy village where it’s a smart move to hire the local guide. He’ll lead you up the rocks for a panoramic view that’s simply out of this world.

Here’s a savvy traveler’s hack for you: pack a bag with some goodies like snacks, clothes, or toys to hand out at the checkpoints en route. These little tokens go a long way in smoothing your journey through the security stops. Also, keep some small change handy in a separate pouch for tipping guides and officers along the way—it’s all about sharing a bit of love and gratitude on the road.

Now, let’s talk roads. The paths to paradise aren’t always paved in gold—literally. The routes in this part of Angola can be quite the rollercoaster ride, so my pro advice? Stick to daylight travel and make sure your ride is up for the challenge. Adventure’s calling, and it’s time to answer with the right wheels.

Musseleje Falls: Your Private Waterfall Retreat in Angola

Here’s a little secret spot, just a couple of hours’ drive past three blink-and-you’ll-miss-’em villages – the Musseleje Falls: your private waterfall retreat in Angola. Park your car just a short walk away, and like magic, local “guides” might pop up. They’re keen to show you the ropes, share a swim, and yes, they’ll hope for a few coins in return.

But oh, the falls! They’re a hidden slice of paradise, likely all yours to enjoy in blissful solitude. The waters are inviting, free from strong currents or critter concerns. So go ahead, take that plunge – it’s a refreshing escape you won’t regret.

Arriving to the hotel Lwendze Aldeamento

There are loads of places to crash, but if you’re hunting for that sweet spot between cool comfort and easy on the wallet, Lwenze Aldeamento is your go-to. They’ve got the full hotel deal and some rad cabins that are a bit more budget-friendly and tucked away from the city hustle. We dropped about 40,000 kwanzas (around 40 bucks) for a double room with breakfast thrown in.

If you’re feeling more adventurous and wanna save some extra cash, the cabins are your best bet at around 25,000 kwanzas a night for two. Plus, the hotel’s spot in the city means fewer mosquitos buzzing around – a big win if you’re not into the whole ‘one with nature’ vibe at night.

Day 2

Kicking off with a hearty breakfast at the hotel is key – you’re gonna need that energy boost for today’s epic quest.

Next up: Kalandula Falls

Brace yourself for the awe-inspiring Kalandula Falls – Africa’s second largest and undoubtedly its most untamed and unspoiled wonder. This is the kind of wild you won’t find just anywhere.

A mere hour’s drive, and you’re parking up, facing these majestic falls. First thing you’ll notice? The place isn’t swamped with tourists. It’s all about that authentic local charm, with folks casually doing laundry in the water streams weaving through the rocks.

Beyond this stunning rock formation, you’ll find a viewpoint that’ll have your jaw on the floor. The view of the falls and their surroundings? Pure magic.

Thinking of venturing to the bottom of the falls? It’s a yes from Mother Nature, but you’ll need to be fit as a fiddle – there’s a steep, slippery 200-meter descent and some serious stone-hopping in the river.

Pro Tip: Grab one of the guides in the green ‘Tour Guide’ sweatshirts. Big shoutout to André – not only did he lend a hand and save me from a tumble, but he also took my backpack to help me move easier.

After what feels like a mix of a hike and a climb (I mean, seriously, it’s a bit of both), you land at the base of Kalandula Falls. It’s a spot that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into an Indiana Jones flick, where the mist from the falls is both a refreshing spritz and a full-on soak after your adventurous trek.

Pro Tip: Fancy a dip here? Go for it, but watch out – those rocks are super slippery, the current’s no joke, and it can get pretty dicey. Always best to have a guide with you if you’re planning this part of the adventure.

Catch a boat ride across the river

Right opposite Calandula’s jaw-dropping falls sits the swanky Pousada Quedas Duque de Bragança. For about 180 dollars a night for two, it’s a bit of a splurge, but hey, you get a pool, top-notch eats, and views that are worth every penny.

So, here’s the deal: we could either backtrack our steps, hop in the car, and drive for about an hour and a half from Kalandula’s parking to the Pousada, or go with the guides’ suggestion and catch a boat ride across the river, then face a climb even steeper than our descent.

Constanza crossing the river

If you’re not much for adventure or have any health or physical limitations, take the safe route and drive back. No need to push it.

We chose the boat adventure. Now, don’t judge the boats by their rustic looks. Despite seeming a bit shaky, they get you across just fine, and the river’s current isn’t as wild as it looks. We shelled out 2,000 kwanzas each (that’s about 2 bucks) for a chill 10-minute ride across the river.

Pro Tip: Eyeing that boat ride across the river? Get yourself a guide. These folks know their stuff and where to find the boats. Go solo, and you might just end up wandering around clueless.

Another Pro Tip: Keep your hands inside the boat! The water might look chill, but don’t get too comfy. There could be crocs lurking, waiting for a snack.

Once you’ve made it to the other side, take a little stroll for another stunning view of the falls. Then comes the real fun: a 10-minute climb up to the amazing Pousada Quedas Duque de Bragança. It’s a bit of a scramble, especially if it’s been raining, so watch your step.

Made it to Kalandula? You’re officially an adventurer now. Time to kick back with a cold beer in hand, soaking in the stunning views of those epic falls. The Pousadas’s restaurant is a real gem – great food at great prices. Trust me, spending a couple of nights in this slice of paradise is worth every second. I’ll save that story for another day.

Heading Back

Time to trek back to your car, but don’t sweat it – your guides have got your back, literally. And after that adventure, why not cool off in the little creek before the falls? It’s the perfect end to an epic journey.

Pro Tip: Aim to hit the road back to Luanda by noon. Believe me, you don’t wanna be on those roads after dark – they’re a whole adventure in themselves.

For lunch, hit up Hospedaria Cacuso’s restaurant. For just 3,000 kwanzas (yep, that’s 3 bucks), you can dig into a hearty plate of pasta, rice, or Funj – Angola’s signature dish – paired with some tasty meat in sauce.

Reflecting on My Unforgettable Journey to Kalandula

Not gonna sugarcoat it, this journey’s not for the faint-hearted. You gotta be ready for the rough and tumble. But is it worth it? Absolutely, 100%. It’s one of those once-in-a-lifetime trips that’ll stick with you. Bet it’ll top your list of adventures, just like it did mine.

2-Day Incredible Kalandula Falls Itinerary

My travel bucket list isn’t done just yet. Next up, I’m aiming to venture into Kangandala National Park to catch a glimpse of the elusive palancas negras – a rare sight, especially since Angola’s about the only place in the world you can still find them. And yes, a night at the Lodge Kalandula is definitely on the cards.

If you need a guide’s contact, additional information, or a more detailed itinerary, don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m more than happy to share the details that made my journey memorable.
